Increasing Demand from Foreign Workers | Fake MyKad Sold for RM5,000

(Kuala Lumpur, 20th) Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Santhul Annuar revealed that illegal immigrants are increasingly seeking fake MyKads, with some willing to pay between RM4,000 and RM5,000 for one.

Citing intelligence from the National Registration Department (NRD), he stated that counterfeit MyKads are being sold by illegal syndicates at prices within this range.

During a parliamentary Q&A session today, he noted that the majority of buyers are foreign nationals seeking employment or wishing to remain in Malaysia without legal documentation.

Santhul Annuar highlighted that the NRD continuously monitors such activities and collaborates with enforcement bodies like the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to tackle the issue.

He further mentioned that under the 1990 National Registration Regulations, individuals caught possessing fake identification documents or misusing someone else's MyKad may face penalties of up to RM20,000 in fines, a maximum prison sentence of three years, or both.

Additionally, he shared that the government is in the final stages of introducing a new MyKad design, replacing the current version that has been in use since 2012.

“The updated MyKad will incorporate advanced security features, enhancing protection against forgery using the latest security technology,” he said.

He emphasized that this initiative aims to strengthen national security by making identity documents more resistant to counterfeiting, thereby safeguarding the country's sovereignty.
