Penang is set to welcome another must-visit attraction! The beautification project for Sungai Pinang Market has announced its mural theme: a 3D depiction of an ice cream bicycle vendor. This mural, expected to be completed before the Lunar New Year, will add a vibrant and nostalgic touch to the market and riverside area.
The mural’s star is modeled after Huang Chin Hi, a 60-year-old vendor at the market who once worked as a traveling ice cream bicycle vendor in his youth. Huang attended the press conference alongside project initiator Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin, mural artist Chan Yuhang, and project coordinator Chan Chu Huay.
Sim revealed that the mural’s theme was chosen through a public vote conducted last month. Of the 286 participants, 153 votes (53.5%) were cast in favor of the ice cream vendor, beating the alternative theme of a 2D bread tricycle vendor, which garnered 114 votes (29.9%).
Expressing gratitude for the community’s involvement, Sim urged the public to respect and preserve this new public artwork, emphasizing its value to Sungai Pinang’s residents. He also highlighted previous investments of RM1.1 million to upgrade and beautify the market and riverside area, with this mural being the first step toward enhancing the district’s cultural and artistic appeal. Future projects are in the pipeline to make the area both livable and attractive to tourists.
