School Bus Fees Set to Increase by RM5 to RM10 Starting February
Parents in Malaysia should brace for a slight increase in school bus fees starting February 2025. The Malaysian School Bus Operators Association (GPBSM) announced plans to raise fees by RM5 to RM10 per month, citing rising operational costs as the driving factor.
Key Details of the Fee Adjustment:
Implementation Timeline:
The new rates are expected to take effect in February 2025, affecting the current academic year.Fee Range:
The proposed hike will vary between RM5 to RM10, depending on negotiations between bus operators and parents. No Government Intervention:
GPBSM clarified that the government will not interfere in determining the fee increase, leaving it to mutual agreements between parents and operators.Reason for the Increase:
Operators face significant financial pressure due to rising costs of spare parts, tires, insurance, and the recently implemented minimum wage of RM1,700. While diesel subsidies help, they are insufficient to offset the overall operational burden.Flexibility for Parents:
Parents dissatisfied with the new rates are encouraged to negotiate or consider alternative operators. GPBSM emphasized that the increase is not mandatory and must be mutually agreed upon.
GPBSM president Mohd Rofii remarked, “The cost of providing services has risen significantly. A small adjustment of RM5 to RM10 is reasonable and ensures sustainability for operators.” He also acknowledged parents' financial concerns, urging both sides to find a fair middle ground.
Industry Perspective
The rising costs of running school buses have led some operators to consider ceasing operations. Despite the challenges, GPBSM expressed hope for understanding from parents, stressing that the fee adjustment is vital to maintain services.
Meanwhile, Datuk Mohd Ali Hassan, chairman of the National Parent-Teacher Association, suggested discussions between parents, schools, and associations to ensure transparency and fairness in the price adjustments.
