Trump Stands Firm on Tariffs, Suggests Some May Be Permanent

Washington, April 8 — Despite ongoing market volatility and rising concerns over global economic uncertainty, U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed on Monday that he has no intention of halting his sweeping tariff plans. In fact, he hinted that some of the tariffs could remain in place indefinitely.

According to multiple U.S. media outlets, when asked whether he would consider delaying the implementation of the new tariffs set to take effect on Wednesday (April 9), Trump responded bluntly: “We’re not thinking about that.”

He emphasized that foreign nations have the opportunity to restore trade balance with the United States by taking appropriate action. “Many countries are coming to us to negotiate. The deals we’re working on will be fair, and in some cases, they’ll be paying substantial tariffs as part of that fairness,” he stated.

Trump also noted that several negotiations were already underway, mentioning that talks with Japan were progressing smoothly. He indicated that further discussions with other countries, including China, were expected soon.

When pressed on whether the tariffs could be a long-term measure or subject to negotiation, Trump replied, “Both are possible.”

“Some of these tariffs might be permanent,” he added, “but there will also be negotiations, because not everything can be resolved through tariffs alone. Our goal is to secure fair and cost-effective trade agreements with every country.”

These remarks came amid ongoing turbulence in the U.S. stock market, which has seen multiple days of declines following Trump’s announcement last week of plans to expand tariffs globally.

Positioning his trade policy as a fundamental restructuring of the nation’s economic framework, Trump told reporters, “It would be easy to have a calm and easy presidency. But we now have a chance to fundamentally reshape our country.”

He continued, “This is our only shot at a fresh start—because no other president has been willing to do what I’m doing, or to endure what I’m going through. I don’t mind the pressure, because I believe in the long-term gains.”

During the same event, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was seated beside Trump, pledged to swiftly reduce Israel’s trade imbalance with the United States and remove certain trade barriers. He expressed hope that Israel could set an example for other nations seeking a more balanced relationship with Washington.
