Kuala Lumpur, 8th — After nearly two years back in China, Yiyi, the second giant panda born in Malaysia, has finally made her public debut!
May 7 marked Yiyi’s first day on display at the Shenshuping Base in Wolong, China. Her enclosure featured a nameplate with her name, gender, and date of birth.
According to Chinese netizens who captured videos of Yiyi at the base, she appears to be in excellent condition — exploring her new territory and happily splashing around in a pool.
Giant pandas Xing Xing (Fuwa) and Liang Liang (Feng Yi), who have been residing in Malaysia since 2014, have had three cubs together. Their eldest daughter, Nuan Nuan, was born in August 2015 and returned to China in November 2017. Yiyi was born on January 14, 2018, and the youngest, Sheng Yi, was born in May 2021.
The name “Yiyi” symbolizes the strong friendship between Malaysia and China.
Originally scheduled to return to China in April 2020, Yiyi’s transfer was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the temporary closure of China’s panda conservation centers. She was eventually sent back on August 29, 2023.
Sheng Yi was already on public display at the Shenshuping Base as early as October 2023, but Yiyi’s debut was delayed due to her initial difficulty adapting to the new environment.
